May 15th Class

Pulo Duro Canyon #1 (from photo by Jim McClain)
This picture was done on an experimental board, Gator Board painted with acrylic (burnt orange) and marble dust.  I doubled the amount of marble dust.  It was not successful.  I had to use mostly NuPastels as the surface was too rough.

Hill Country Road.
I attempted to start this on another Gator Board, but the surface was too rough so I ended up using a piece of Canson (white) taped to the other side of the board.  Jodie assisted in finishing the tree and the shadows.

Lake Superior Sunset
This was an end of class painting (less than an hour left).  I used a piece of dark orange Canson paper.

Art Show Receptions

Thursday we attended the Texas Pastel Society opening reception at the San Antonio Central Library.  There was a nice crowd.  Lots of amazing pastels.  The gallery was spacious, three stories tall and well lit.  Pictures were suspended from the ceiling on wires.  First and second places, as well as some honorable mentions were awarded in portrait, still life and landscape.  The landscapes were most numerous.  Several cloud and sky scenes were entered.  It was an honor to be represented in this show.

Friday was the opening reception for the NBAL Art in Bloom show.  Again a large crowd.  No honorable mentions were awarded.  I was disappointed that my MardiGras Rose did not get a ribbon.  However, several people mentioned that they thought it was an excellent photograph, including two of the top photographers in the art league.
